competitor price monitoring for Indian Amazon, Flipkart and D2C sellers
Competitor Price Monitoring India: 3-Step Ladder for Sellers
Competitor Price Monitoring India: 3-Step Ladder for Sellers
The Great Indian Festival reportedly began on 8 Oct 2026, Flipkart's Big Billion Days started on 9 Oct, and Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) falls on Sunday 8 Nov 2026. For the next month, rival prices on your category will move far more often than you can open tabs. If someone on your team still checks rivals by hand every morning, you already know the problem.
This guide is about competitor price monitoring India sellers can actually run: a D2C brand or Amazon/Flipkart seller with 50 to 500 SKUs, a few crore in yearly sales, and a Google Sheet that is always slightly out of date. The honest answer is not "buy a tool" or "build a scraper". It is a ladder with three rungs, and most sellers should stop on the first or second.
We will cover what each rung does, what you cannot collect at any price, how often to check, what the terms and the law say, and what it costs. Where something is our judgement rather than a sourced fact, we say so.
How do I track competitor prices on Amazon India and Flipkart?
Think of three rungs, cheapest first:
- Use what the marketplace already gives you (Amazon Automate Pricing and the Selling Partner API for your own listings).
- A Google Sheet watchlist with a floor price and an alert, filled by hand or by a light import.
- A custom scraper that collects public prices on a schedule and sends a WhatsApp alert when a rival undercuts you.
Each rung costs more and breaks more easily than the one before. Climb only when the rung below is visibly costing you money.
To make this concrete, picture a hypothetical D2C home-audio and accessories brand with 200 SKUs across Amazon.in, Flipkart and its own site. Someone opens 30 rival listings each morning and pastes prices into a Sheet. That is an illustration, not a client and not a measurement. We will use it through the rest of the post.
Rung 1: Amazon Automate Pricing and the SP-API for your own ASINs
If you sell on Amazon.in, start inside Seller Central. Amazon's Automate Pricing can match, undercut or hold above the Featured Offer price (the offer that wins the main buy box) within a minimum and maximum you set. It is free, but confirm it is available in your live account before you plan around it.
For developers, Amazon's Selling Partner API (SP-API) has pricing endpoints:
- getFeaturedOfferExpectedPriceBatch: up to 40 requests per call, a rate of 0.033 requests per second, needs the Pricing role. In India it supports a postal-code location. It can return NO_COMPETING_OFFER, and Amazon says auto-generated values must be verified.
- getListingOffersBatch (0.5 requests per second, up to 20 per batch) and getItemOffersBatch (0.1 requests per second) return the lowest-priced offers. We could not confirm India-specific behaviour for these, so test before you rely on them.
The limit of this rung is simple: it covers Amazon only, and it works around listings you already hold. It tells you nothing about the rival's own website or their Flipkart price.
Rung 2: a Google Sheet watchlist with a floor price and an alert
Can Google Sheets track competitor prices automatically? Partly. The built-in IMPORTXML function reads static HTML only, so a price drawn by JavaScript will come back blank. We have not verified how it behaves on Amazon.in or Flipkart pages, so test your own URLs before trusting it.
A watchlist that works even with manual entry has these columns:
| Column | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Your SKU and your price | The baseline |
| Rival listing URL | One row per rival per SKU |
| Rival price and date checked | Without a date, the number is useless |
| Your floor price | The lowest price you can sell at and still earn margin |
| Alert flag | A formula that turns red when the rival is below your floor |
The floor price is the important part. It stops you chasing a rival into a loss. If you do not know your floor per SKU, fix that before buying any tool.
Our judgement: for 200 SKUs, check only the 20 to 40 SKUs that bring most of your revenue. The long tail rarely justifies daily attention.
When NOT to build a custom scraper
This is the section most vendors skip. Do not build a custom scraper if:
- You have fewer than roughly 50 SKUs that face real price competition. A Sheet and ten minutes a day is cheaper.
- Your price is not what wins. If buyers choose you on brand, reviews or delivery, tracking a rival's rupee drop adds noise.
- Rung 1 already answers the question. If your problem is only the Amazon Featured Offer, Automate Pricing and the SP-API come first.
- You have no rule for what to do with the data. An alert nobody acts on is just a more expensive Sheet.
- A ready tool fits. If a listed SaaS covers your marketplaces and your SKU count, renting it is usually the sensible choice (see the cost section).
That last point is our judgement, and it is honest: a custom build earns its place when your competitor set, your marketplaces or your reaction rules do not fit a standard tool.
Rung 3: a custom scraper with a WhatsApp alert on undercut
A custom scraper makes sense when you watch rivals across Amazon, Flipkart and brand sites at once, want the data in your own sheet or panel, and want a precise rule such as "message the pricing owner on WhatsApp when a rival is below my floor on any top-40 SKU".
The flow is plain: a scheduled job collects public prices, compares each with your floor, and sends a message only on a breach. It logs every check so you can see the history. A web scraping build is written around your SKU list and your rules, not a generic dashboard.
On cost per alert, WhatsApp Business rates in India (excluding GST) are listed at about ₹0.115 per utility message and ₹0.8631 per marketing message, as reported by Free Press Journal, updated 30 Sep 2026. Service messages became paid from 1 Oct 2026 beyond 1,000 free per number per month. At the utility rate, 100 alerts come to about ₹12 before GST (around 18%) and your BSP's fees. Whether a staff price alert counts as "utility" is Meta's decision, so confirm with your provider.
What you cannot collect, whichever rung you choose
Even a good scraper has blind spots. Be clear-eyed about them:
- Logged-in or pincode-specific prices. What a buyer sees can depend on pincode, seller and login. Amazon's SP-API accepting a postal code suggests the Featured Offer can differ by location. A public-page check shows one view, not all views.
- Rival stock levels. You can see "out of stock" on a page at best, never their inventory.
- Rival sales and margins. No tool lawfully gives you these. Treat vendor claims of sales estimates as estimates.
- Private seller dashboards. Off limits entirely.
So a price alert is a signal, not a verdict. Always check the listing yourself before changing a price.
How often should I check competitor prices?
This is Cybiqon's judgement, not a sourced number. A rough starting point:
- Top revenue SKUs in a sale window (such as now, through Diwali): a few times a day.
- Core catalogue in normal weeks: once a day.
- Long-tail SKUs: weekly.
Price2Spy, a commercial tool, lists up to 8 price checks per day on its Premium plan, which gives a sense of the range vendors consider normal. More frequent checks raise your cost and your chance of being blocked, with little benefit unless your own pricing can react that fast. Start slow and raise frequency only when you can show a late reaction cost you a sale.
Is it legal to scrape Amazon or Flipkart prices in India?
Our reading, not legal advice. There is no statute in India aimed at scraping. Claims usually come from the IT Act (sections 43 and 66) and contract or terms-of-use theories, and the position is unsettled. We found no Indian judgment that decides scraping of public listing pages. For a wider view, see our post on whether web scraping is legal in India. Prices on a listing are not personal data, in our reading.
The terms are clearer than the law:
- Flipkart's Terms of Use bar using a "deep-link", "page-scrape", "robot", "spider" or other automatic device to access, acquire, copy or monitor any part of the site, and Flipkart reserves the right to bar such activity. Its robots.txt (fetched 9 Oct 2026) blocks search pages, sort and pagination parameters, seller listing pages, offer-details and reviews. Flipkart's Marketplace Seller APIs cover your own listings, price, inventory and orders, but we found no official competitor-price API.
- Amazon.in: its robots.txt has no blanket block on product pages, but we could not read its Conditions of Use, and Amazon restricts automated data gathering. Read the Conditions of Use linked at the foot of amazon.in yourself.
We do not advise getting around blocks, rotating identities or defeating protections. If a site says no, the answer is to use an API, a licensed data source, or manual checks on that site.
Competition law also matters. The CCI's October 2025 AI market study treats "monitoring algorithms" that scrape market data as possible facilitators of coordination. Our practical reading: watching public prices so you can price independently is routine. Do not exchange price intentions with rivals, and do not hand price-setting to a hub shared with them. Read the report on cci.gov.in.
What does a price monitoring tool cost?
Rent or build? Here are the sourced numbers:
| Option | Listed price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Prisync | $99/month (up to 100 products), $199 (1,000), $399 (5,000) | URL-based plans; channel-based or hybrid plans go up to $799/month for 5,000, with channel add-ons of +$100 or +$200 |
| Insydz (Indian) | from ₹3,999/month | Single third-party listing on Capterra India; verify with the vendor |
| Bright Data Flipkart Price Tracker | from $2,000/month | From a search snippet; verify |
| 42Signals | Not public | Ask for a quote |
| Price2Spy Premium | On request | Up to 8 price checks per day |
Prisync's page (checked 9 Oct 2026) does not name a currency; we read the figures as dollars. Over a year, that is $1,188 at the 100-product tier and $4,788 at the 5,000-product tier, before any channel add-ons.
For a 200-SKU brand, a tool in the $199 tier is a sensible benchmark. A custom build only wins if it replaces more than the subscription: the hours of manual checks, and the lost sales when you react late. Do that arithmetic with your own numbers, and if renting wins, rent.
If your reconciliation and margin data also live in sheets, our post on Amazon and Flipkart seller reconciliation software shows how the same data can feed your floor prices. For the broader picture of using scraped public data for decisions, read web scraping and AI automation for market research.
FAQs
How do I track competitor prices on Amazon India and Flipkart?
Start with Amazon Automate Pricing and the SP-API for your own listings, then keep a Sheet watchlist of rival URLs with a floor price. Flipkart has no official competitor-price API that we found, and its terms bar automated access, so manual checks or licensed data are the safe route there.
Is it legal to scrape Amazon or Flipkart prices in India?
There is no scraping-specific Indian law, and the position is unsettled. The bigger practical risk is breaking a site's terms, which Flipkart's explicitly prohibit. This is our reading, not legal advice.
Can Google Sheets track competitor prices automatically?
Only in limited cases. IMPORTXML reads static HTML, so prices drawn by JavaScript return blank. Test it on your own URLs before relying on it.
Does Amazon have an API for competitor prices?
Yes, for sellers. The SP-API pricing endpoints, such as getFeaturedOfferExpectedPriceBatch, return Featured Offer and lowest-priced-offer data, with rate limits. India-specific behaviour should be tested.
What does a price monitoring tool cost?
Prisync lists $99 to $399 a month for 100 to 5,000 products, and Insydz is listed from ₹3,999 a month. Some tools do not publish prices.
Want this built for your catalogue?
If your 200 SKUs and three or four rivals no longer fit a tool, Cybiqon can build the watchlist for you: a scheduled collector for the public listings you are allowed to watch, your floor price per SKU, and a WhatsApp alert to the right person when a rival undercuts you. It is written for your catalogue and rules, not configured from a template, and you own the code. Read about our web scraping service, then book a 30-minute call at https://tidycal.com/itspyguru/cybiqon-30-minute-meeting, call +91 9250711473, or email [email protected] with your SKU count and the three competitors you watch.
Conclusion
Good competitor price monitoring India sellers can trust starts small: Automate Pricing and the SP-API, then a Sheet with floor prices, and only then a custom scraper with a WhatsApp alert. Know what you cannot see, check at a sensible pace, respect each site's terms, and set your prices on your own. With the festive weeks running to Diwali on 8 Nov 2026, send us your SKU count and rivals at [email protected] and we will tell you honestly which rung you need.
