IndiaMART Fake Leads: How to Tell Which Enquiries Are Real

The first number rings out. The second buyer says he never posted anything. The third already has five quotes. By Friday your salesperson has dialled thirty IndiaMART contacts and reached four real buyers, and the owner is complaining about IndiaMART fake leads at the renewal meeting.

Some of those leads were fake. Others were real but expired while they waited. IndiaMART's own help centre says a BuyLead expires on the third day after posting, or as soon as the sixth supplier buys it. Nobody can tell you how many were which. No published figure exists for the share of fake leads on IndiaMART, and almost no seller keeps a record.

This guide is for the owner or sales head of a manufacturer or trader in industrial supplies, packaging, machinery or chemicals, on a paid plan bringing in 20 to 100 enquiries and BuyLeads a week. It covers:

  • the platform rules that quietly kill real leads
  • the free checks to run before you consume a BuyLead
  • a per-category lead log and a cost-per-real-buyer formula to take to your renewal
  • when an owned agent that qualifies every lead within minutes is worth building

Why am I getting fake leads on IndiaMART?

When a seller says "fake", he usually means one of five things, and each has a different cause:

  • Unreachable: the number is switched off, wrong, or never answers.
  • Denied: the person picks up and says he never posted a requirement.
  • Already sourced: the need was real, but you were the fifth or sixth supplier to call.
  • Wrong fit: wrong spec, a quantity below your MOQ, a city you don't serve, or someone just checking prices.
  • Repeat: IndiaMART re-sends the same BuyLead when the buyer's requirement hasn't been met.

Only the first two are truly fake. The other three are problems of speed, filtering and counting.

How big is the problem? Nobody has published the number. Trustpilot rates IndiaMART 1.7 out of 5 from 504 reviews, and reviews from August to October 2026 allege irrelevant or invalid leads. These are unverified individual claims. They show how sellers feel, but they don't measure anything.

In June 2026 IndiaMART told Reuters it would double its AI spending roughly every six months to curb fake listings. That targets bad sellers, not buyers. Nothing published promises verified buyers, and IndiaMART's own terms describe it as acting "solely as a matchmaking platform".

Speed matters too. In a 2011 Harvard Business Review study of about 1.25 million leads at US firms, firms that tried to reach a lead within an hour were nearly 7 times as likely to qualify it as firms that waited longer. It's old, global data, but IndiaMART's expiry rules point the same way.

IndiaMART BuyLead expiry and weekly BuyLeads: rules that make real leads look fake

According to IndiaMART's help page on BuyLead expiry (updated 6 Mar 2025), a BuyLead expires when any one of these happens:

  1. the 6th supplier buys it
  2. the buyer marks it expired
  3. the third day after it was posted arrives
  4. IndiaMART receives a complaint against the buyer

So up to six paying suppliers can buy the same BuyLead. Open it on day two and the buyer may already have settled, and on the phone he'll sound fake.

Weekly allocation is just as strict. IndiaMART's weekly leads page (6 Mar 2025) says weekly BuyLeads are allocated on Sunday and "will lapse on Saturday midnight, if remain unused". From IndiaMART's Advantage Program page (31 Aug 2026) and paid services page (14 Oct 2026):

Plan Weekly BuyLeads List price, 1 year
Mini Dynamic Catalog (monthly) 7 Not listed
Mini Dynamic Catalog (annual) 10 ₹40,000
TrustSEAL Pro 14 ₹60,000
Maximiser Pro 28 ₹85,000
IM Star Pro 30 Request a quote
IM Leader Pro 40 Request a quote
IM IL 70 Not listed

Plans also get 1–2 bonus BuyLeads a day. GST treatment isn't stated, and an older snapshot showed the entry plan at ₹35,000, so expect ₹35,000–40,000+ a year depending on when you signed up.

The festive-week trap. Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 Nov 2026 and Diwali on Sunday 8 Nov. If your desk closes from Dhanteras, whatever is left of that week's allocation lapses at midnight on Saturday 7 Nov. A desk that only works BuyLeads in a Friday batch wastes allocation it has paid for, every week of the year.

What is an IndiaMART PNS defaulter, and how do missed calls cut your BuyLeads?

PNS calls are the buyer calls IndiaMART routes to you (type "P" in its lead data). A missed one can cost more than that one buyer.

IndiaMART's PNS defaulter page (updated 6 Mar 2025) says: "If a paid catalog member is marked as PNS/Email defaulter, the weekly buylead count is restricted to 7 buyleads", irrespective of the service type. That means a Maximiser Pro seller entitled to 28 a week can drop to 7.

The page doesn't publish the threshold or how to get off the list. Don't guess. Ask your account manager, in writing:

  • What missed-call or unanswered-email rate makes a seller a defaulter, and over what period?
  • Is my account marked as a defaulter right now?
  • What do I have to do to come off the list?

In the meantime, log every missed PNS call and whether anyone called back. If your weekly count ever drops to 7 without explanation, check that log first.

How do I check whether an IndiaMART buyer is genuine before calling?

  • Look for the green tick. According to IndiaMART's page on information in a BuyLead, it means IndiaMART has verified the buyer's mobile or email. It doesn't prove intent, but unticked leads go to the back of the queue.
  • Run the eight checks. IndiaMART's BuyLead check page suggests checking specs, recency, location, quantity, features, order value, usage and frequency before you consume a lead. Recency matters most, because a lead posted two days ago is close to its day-three expiry.
  • Mark irrelevant leads "Not Relevant" every time. It's the only remedy IndiaMART's page on marking an enquiry irrelevant documents, and it leaves you a paper trail.

And refunds? IndiaMART's help centre documents no refund route or replacement policy for a bad BuyLead. If you want to raise one anyway, do it in writing with your account manager, and bring the log below.

The IndiaMART fake leads log: what to record for every lead

At most renewals the owner has a feeling and the account manager has a dashboard. A shared sheet, one tab per category, evens that out. Give every lead these columns:

Column What to write Why it matters
Lead ID The ID in Lead Manager Catches repeats
Category Which product category it came through Lets you work out cost per category
Type W direct enquiry, B BuyLead, P PNS call, WA WhatsApp Lead types behave differently
Received Date and time Shows expiry risk
First contact Date and time of the first attempt Gives your speed-to-lead
Green tick Y / N Shows whether verified buyers are more often real
Reachable Y / N under a fixed rule, e.g. three attempts over two days Separates dead numbers from slow callers
Requirement Confirmed / Already sourced / Denies posting Separates fake from late
Fit Within MOQ and service area, Y / N Separates fake from wrong fit
Not Relevant marked Y / N Your record with IndiaMART
Quoted / Won Y / N, and order value The result

Each week, put every lead in one bucket: Fake (unreachable or denies posting), Late (already sourced), Wrong fit or Real. If Late turns out to be the biggest bucket, the fix is in your own office.

The Type column also settles disputes. A 2023 SmartCustomer review alleges one lead went to 10–11 sellers, which conflicts with the six-supplier BuyLead cap. It may have been a direct enquiry or a re-sent BuyLead, and without a Type column nobody can tell.

Keep the log for six to eight weeks, then cross-check it against IndiaMART's category-wise BuyLeads Report (last three months, under Manage Products). The same columns work for Meta ad leads, though the fixes for fake leads from Facebook ads are different.

An illustration, not a client: say a corrugated-packaging trader in Ahmedabad on the annual Mini Dynamic Catalog plan gets 40–60 leads a week across three categories. Missed PNS calls go unlogged, and BuyLeads are opened in a Friday batch after many have expired. At renewal he "feels" half were fake and gets offered an upgrade. Eight weeks of this log would give him a number per category instead.

IndiaMART leads quality vs plan cost: is the paid plan worth renewing?

For each category, over the weeks you logged:

Cost per real buyer = (plan cost for the period × the category's share of all leads + desk time on that category) ÷ real buyers in that category

  • Plan cost for the period = annual fee × weeks logged ÷ 52. On the ₹40,000 list price, eight weeks comes to about ₹6,154.
  • Desk time = hours your callers spent on that category × their hourly cost. It's often bigger than the plan fee.
  • Real buyer = reachable, confirms the requirement, and fits your MOQ and service area.

Put the result next to your gross margin on a typical order and your win rate on real buyers. If one won order comfortably covers the cost of several real buyers, the category is worth keeping. If it doesn't, tighten that category on your listing or drop it. Bring both numbers to the renewal and ask the account manager to show how the upgrade changes them.

The upgrade pitch has some basis. IndiaMART's Q1 FY27 results (21 Jul 2026) show paying suppliers falling to 218,000 at 30 June 2026, the third quarterly decline in a row, with churn concentrated in the entry Silver tier. CEO Dinesh Agarwal said Silver suppliers often leave within their first year because they struggle to compete with Gold and Platinum sellers. The quarter's 26 million unique enquiries can't be divided by paying suppliers to get your share, because enquiries also go to free storefronts.

Only your log can tell you whether a bigger plan would pay for you. If a category doesn't pay at any tier, our guide to getting B2B leads without IndiaMART sets out a 90-day taper plan.

IndiaMART lead manager API: when an owned agent beats the spreadsheet

At 20 leads a week a sheet is enough. At 60–100, leads go stale between "received" and "first contact". Getting enquiries into a system is covered in our post on IndiaMART CRM integration. This section is about what happens next: sorting real buyers from fake ones.

What IndiaMART's Pull API page (updated 11 Dec 2025) allows:

  • It's a paid-only add-on. Generating a new key deactivates the old one, and a key expires after 7 days without use.
  • Each request covers at most 7 days, going back up to 365 days. Hits must be at least 5 minutes apart, and more than 5 hits in a minute blocks the key for 15 minutes.
  • Each lead carries a UNIQUE_QUERY_ID and a QUERY_TYPE (W, B, P, BIZ for catalogue view, or WA), plus the sender's name, mobile, email and message. The Push API is the real-time webhook alternative.

An agent built on this would:

  1. Pull every 10–15 minutes with overlapping windows, or receive Push webhooks, and dedupe on UNIQUE_QUERY_ID.
  2. Make first contact within minutes. For BuyLeads and direct enquiries, that means a call or SMS asking permission to continue on WhatsApp. WhatsApp replies go only to WA-type enquiries, where the buyer opened the conversation.
  3. Tag every outcome (unreachable, denied, already sourced, wrong fit, real) and remind the salesperson to mark Not Relevant.
  4. Send a weekly report of real buyers per category, ₹ per real buyer and median time to first contact.

The rules, as general information rather than legal advice. Under Meta's policy, an IndiaMART enquiry is not a WhatsApp opt-in. Outside the 24-hour service window, business-initiated messages must be approved templates. From 1 Oct 2026 Meta also charges for utility messages inside that window. Calls and SMS fall under TRAI's TCCCPR rules, amended in February 2025. DPDP Rules 2025 notice and consent duties apply from 13 May 2027, according to AZB & Partners. FAQs

Are IndiaMART BuyLeads shared with other suppliers, and with how many?

Yes. IndiaMART's help centre says a BuyLead expires when the 6th supplier buys it, so up to six paying suppliers can get it. It also expires on day three after posting, when the buyer marks it expired, or when IndiaMART receives a complaint against the buyer.

What is a PNS defaulter on IndiaMART and how does it affect my BuyLeads?

A paid seller marked as a PNS/Email defaulter is limited to 7 BuyLeads a week on any plan. The threshold isn't published, so ask your account manager in writing.

Do unused IndiaMART BuyLeads carry forward to next week?

No. They're allocated on Sunday and lapse at midnight on Saturday if they're not used.

Can I get a refund or replacement for a fake BuyLead on IndiaMART?

IndiaMART's help centre documents no refund route. Its documented remedy is marking the lead "Not Relevant". If you raise a refund anyway, do it in writing and bring your lead log.

Can I message an IndiaMART buyer on WhatsApp without their permission?

In general, no. An IndiaMART enquiry isn't a WhatsApp opt-in under Meta's policy, so ask permission on a call or SMS first, or reply only where the buyer opened the chat. This is general information, not legal advice.

What Cybiqon would build to sort real buyers from fake ones

If your sheet is already slipping, Cybiqon would build an IndiaMART qualifying agent for your categories. It pulls every enquiry, BuyLead and PNS call through IndiaMART's official Lead Manager API and makes first contact within minutes: call or SMS first, WhatsApp only where the rules allow. It tags dead and denied numbers and sends you a weekly cost per real buyer for each category. We write it for your products, MOQs and sales desk rather than configuring a template, and you own the code whichever IndiaMART plan you choose next.

Our AI agents work starts at ₹19,999 and is scoped on the first call. Book a 30-minute call, call +91 9250711473, or email [email protected] with your IndiaMART categories and weekly lead count.

Conclusion

Some IndiaMART fake leads really are fake: dead numbers, and buyers who deny posting. Many others are real leads that expired on day three, went to five other suppliers first, or lapsed at midnight on Saturday. Use IndiaMART's own checks, mark Not Relevant every time, and keep a per-category log for eight weeks. You'll go into your renewal with a cost per real buyer instead of a hunch. When the volume outgrows a sheet, Cybiqon can build the agent that keeps that number for you.
